Family violence was a part of my life for a long time, growing my Mother’s boyfriends physically abused her and us. The silence was excruciating, frustrated and I was filled with anger. I couldn’t understand why my Mother would out us through this, I couldn’t understand why a grown man would hurt young children. I was the protector, the one who always tried to stop it… to beg him to beat me, but please just leave them alone.

After I finished year 12 I used they money I had in the bank to by a one way ticket to Alice Springs, as far away as I could get. I worked three jobs, because it turns out I am really good at business and management. Saving all my money to pay for further education. I met a guy and it turns out, sometimes when you are so hell bent on NOT doing something it has this mysterious way of coming to you. He had a drug and alcohol addiction… not to mention he was violently abusive. I was scared to leave and scared to stay, when I tried to leave he would threaten to kill me or himself, one day he did nearly kill me… I still stayed.

One day I saw an opportunity to leave and I did, I left everything I had worked so hard for, all my money, my belongings…everything.

I started again, I went into debt to continue my education and after years of making lots of money I went onto Austudy (the extremely low government payment)

It was tough, I’m not going to lie. But I made a promise to myself that I would do whatever it took to break the cycle of domestic violence and I did.

It took a long time, countless books, events and workshops…. I got there. when I was in my abusive relationship I never cried. When I left, I still didn't cry... for YEARS. I spent my time healing ME and doing what I had to do in order to get my power back. When I was strong enough, I cried and eventually with the tears turned into forgiveness, the shame and embarrassment turned into fearlessness and courage.
